Abergavenny riverside - directions

Way to go

From the bus stop on the A40 walk south down the narrow country lane. Follow this around to the left and continue for around 15 minutes, until you pass Church Cottage on your left and reach a left-hand bend with Llanwenarth Church to your left. Cross the stile on the right which is waymarked to the river.
Follow the path along the edge of two fields and it soon joins the banks of the river Usk, opposite some farm buildings. Turn left onto the riverside path and continue over a succession of stiles. The path then crosses two footbridges that span tributaries before tracking along the foot of a wood.
Continue beyond the wood with the river to your right. After a level section with some small sandy banks, you’ll reach the Llanfoist road bridge, almost opposite the Bridge End Inn. Cross the road and turn left, before going through an elaborate kissing gate on the right.
The gate leads back to the riverbank on a well-surfaced path. Follow this along the edge of Castle Meadows until it bears left away from the river and through a gate beneath the castle. Keep straight ahead (not left towards the castle) and a short section of path delivers you first to Mill Street and then onto the Monmouth Road, where you’ll see the bus station on the other side.
